Indriķis Ģelzis. “Specifying Interpretations on a Single Individual (Unnoticeable Difference)”

January 24th, 5 pm Indriķis Ģelzis’ exhibition “Specifying Interpretations on a Single Individual (Unnoticeable Difference)” opens at the Intro Hall of the Riga Art Space.

“Three people look at a single individual.  Three copies of the individual unanimously claim that they have built only one little violet closet,” writes Indriķis Ģelzis about the content of his personal exhibition.  The process of precision is endless, and each new experience offers a new description of what has already been noticed – that which gradually turns from the ordinary to the unusual.

The difference between the ordinary and the unusual can be all but unnoticeable.  We consider the ordinary to be “real” or “substantial,” but what is the unusual?  A mistake?  An interpretation?  Something new?  As the unnoticeable differences continue, reality changes, as well.  “The exhibition will offer a look at four interpretations of a single individual,” the artist explains.  “On the basis of a single mistake, these interpretations try to coexist with an event that has happened.  The idea for the exhibition is based on a personal and everyday event which involved a single mistake that caused suffering for everyone but me myself.”  The exhibition consists of five new artworks which Ģelzis has produced specifically for his new personal exhibition at the Rīga Arts Space:  Angle, Three Memories of a Single Object, Trailer, Column and Photograph.  The unusual appearance of these objects brings to mind the Surrealism which artists cultivated 100 years ago, but the texture is different.  Surrealism operated as a policy, strategy and tactic which seemed to offer a universal model for culture, but Indulis Ģelzis’ “Specifying Proposed Interpretations of a Single Individual (Unnoticeable Difference)” can be seen as a speculation that, for reasons of perception, is supplemented with visual images.  This exhibition does not create a new world, instead trying to understand the old one.  This is art which is sobering, not intoxicating, and it’s unannounced, but evident coolness makes it appropriate for the 21st century.

Curator:  Inga Šteimane

A chance to meet the artist will occur at a brunch at the Rīga Arts Space at noon on Sunday, February 9.  Participants will be able to tour the exhibition in an informal manner and in the presence of the artist.  The discussion will be led by curator Inga Šteimane.
