Flower for the artist in Latin is flos artifici. This is the name of the collection by Danas Aleksa, who gathered flowers given to Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association’s Artists during openings of their exhibitions for an entire year, starting at 6th January, 2015 when Jurga Barilaitė’s ehxihition Abrakadabra opened at Vartai gallery.

Danas Aleksa: „This project is about institution and interval of time. Interval of a year resembles a capsule with clear boundaries giving a reference point in the infinity of time. Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association is one of many institutions drifting between the past and the future, where pace of movement is divided into the categories of years. The idea to collect flowers for the entire year came up during gatherings at Malonioji 6 before New Year. Flowers are like silent artists’ reports of exhibitions that took place.

Flowers in the context of the contemporary art are given less and less often. Maybe because of changing status of authorship when artist is regarded as scientific associate, or maybe because of the pathos conflicting with the essence of contemporary art. Collection was inspired by the ritual of exhibition opening followed by applause and giving flowers and this ritual’s connection with the artwork itself or the lack of this connection. On the other hand, seeing now all these plants together they remind me of flags climbers carry to the mountain tops. It is an additional weight to carry, but it becomes a symbol of achievement.

This collection are like gates into the garden of the past time where the fragments of the past are captured into the plant based medium.“
