‘Exhibition and Retreat’ by Lina Albrikienė and Ida Divinzenz at Sodų 4

In February project space „Sodų 4“ was hosting a show by artists Lina Albrikienė and Ida Divinzenz who met during the residency exchange programme in Vienna in 2016. Touching upon different aspects of connecting the past and the present, both artists demonstrate the use of archival material to address questions like fragility, temporality and the carrying of information.

Lina Albrikienė’s project “SIGHT” focuses on high-rise air-raid shelters or bunkers, in particular so-called flak towers, architectural monuments constructed during the Second World War in Germany and Austria. The dual function of these buildings was air-defense as well as to provide shelter for thousands of civilians. The later post-war use of the flak towers is the matter under investigation. It reveals an attempt to suppress an uncanny feeling that arises from a collective memory of tragedy.

The photographs of Ida Divinzenz are a result of her research into colonial history and its representations in the “national museums” of Paris during her residency at the Cité internationale des arts in 2016. Triggered by most recent events in Paris, a series consisting of five parts has been developed. It traces connections between colonial remains and contemporary propaganda. The five parts are supposed to mark the nets of meaning: waiting/fronts, incident/standing upright, nameless/outside of the group, interference/intermingling and utopia/counter-society (culture?).

Lina Albrikiene (1984) lives and works in Vilnius and Jurmala. She received BA and MA in Photography and Media Art from Vilnius Academy of Arts. In 2011 the artist won the Grand Prize at the Young European Creators in Paris as well as the Grand Prize for the Young Artist Debut in Lithuania. Since 2004 her works are exhibited in Lithuania and abroad. She took part in several Art-in-Residence programs including Paris, Krems, and in spring 2017 she will be resident in Vienna (Kultur Kontakt Austria) where she is going to do further research on the project SIGHT.

Ida Divinzenz studied Fine Arts/sculpture in Berlin and Vienna and lives and works in Vienna. She had the opportunity to attend residencies in Paris (FR) and Nida (LT) and exhibited at various art spaces in Hamburg, Berlin (DE), Vienna (A) and New York (USA). Her works have been acquired by the following collections: the photo collection of the Austrian Federal Chancellery, Artothek lower Austria and private collections.
