Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art (LCCA) invites young and emerging artists, art critics, curators and cultural project managers from the Baltic States to apply for the second LCCA Summer School titled This is Tomorrow! that will take place in the artists’ residence at Rucka Manor in Cēsis from 6 – 11 June, 2015.
The central theme of this year’s Summer School is a perspective on current and recent projections of the future. The title This is Tomorrow! refers to the seminal exhibition that took place in London’s Whitechapel Gallery in 1956, where artists, musicians, architects, and graphic designers presented their versions on the relationship between art and contemporary culture. Likewise the collaboration between various players in the art world – artists, curators, producers and critics, will be at the core of this year’s Summer School, together examining and forming perspectives and visions on the current and future processes shaping art and culture. The participants will be offered a comprehensive programme of theoretical and practical activities consisting of lectures, seminars, workshops and discussions by local and international lecturers, as well as developing independent creative projects.
What will the tomorrow that we are now shaping be like? How do our everyday choices influence the tomorrow and the immediate future, what will be its values? How do present and past visions of an ideal world or at least an alternative to the existing reality differ? Do these visions only exist in the imagination, or do they also shed light on the factual structures of reality? These questions engage representatives of the art world as well as other spheres, who constantly model answers and devote themselves to explorations searching for a new vision within the totality of the social system.
The LCCA Summer School will provide a broad overview of the thematic context, ranging from socio-political and anthropological approaches to scientific discoveries and their fusion with various fields of culture. The Summer School will facilitate the analysis of the current situation as well as the development of new perspectives and models for tomorrow’s world.
Lectures and workshops will be conducted by internationally renowned artists, theoreticians and philosophers from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and other European countries, including artists Agnė Bagdžiūnaitė, Gints Gabrāns, Julijonas Urbonas, Tellervo Kalleinen, Rasa Šmite and Raitis Šmits, Ivars Drulle, Voldemārs Johansons, writer and journalist Kirill Kobrin, anthropologist Lauren M. Rhodes, art scholars Laine Kristberga, Andres Kurg, Elnara Taidre and Dovilė Tumpytė, literary critic Jaak Tomberg, writer and critic Berk Vaher, philosopher Tomas Čiučelis and physicist Aigars Atvars. The largest part of the summer school programme – lectures and presentations – will be open to the general public.
The Summer School programme will take place in English. Participation is free of charge, however the participants are required to cover an accommodation fee of EUR 80.
