Photographers and diverse range of artists working with photography are invited to apply for the ISSP Riga Residency Programme in Riga, Latvia. The Residency offers a stay of 1–2 months during the time period of 1 June to December 31, 2020. Application deadline – 15 February.
Launched in 2018, the ISSP Riga Residency [1] provides an opportunity for concentrated work on a personal project informed by interaction with the city and its residents. ISSP welcomes those interested in creating work referring to the social, cultural and historical context of Riga, as well as those who need to take their time to rethink and complete their ongoing work. The visiting artists will be offered an opportunity to interact with the local audience in a public artist talk and/or possible other events or pop-up exhibitions.
For the second time, the Residency is organised in cooperation with kuš! [2] – a Riga-based international platform for comics artists and illustrators, which will create extra opportunities for interdisciplinary interaction between the Residency participants. There are no limitations regarding age, background or photographic style. The residents will be chosen based on their applications and fit to the residency calendar.
The ISSP Riga Residency provides a private room in a comfortable apartment in the center of Riga, access to the library and other facilities of the ISSP, a part-time staff member to provide local support and contacts and introduce the residents to the vibrant arts and culture scene. There is a fee of 350 euros for one month at the residency to cover the basic costs of accommodation.

Until April 4, the ISSP Gallery in Riga hosts an exhibition “Wow, what a great view” [3] that features works of six artists, created during their time at the ISSP Riga Residency. The exhibition, set up as the residency apartment turned upside down, is a homage to the most popular residency conversation starter and a rumination on the process of being a residency artist in a new city, an outsider looking in.
ISSP is a non-commercial platform for contemporary photography, based in Latvia and acting internationally. It offers high-quality alternative education and networking programmes for emerging photographers. Since 2006, ISSP has yearly run the International Summer School of Photography, initiated local and international education and exchange programmes, produced exhibitions, publications and festivals, and, most importantly, gathered a thriving community of emerging photographers in Latvia and internationally. The ISSP Gallery – an exhibition and events space for contemporary photography – was established in Riga in 2018.
