"Another Crossroads of Epochs. Contemporary Lithuanian Art from the Collection of the Lithuanian Art Museum: 1989-2007" at National Gallery of Art, Vilnius

NDG

Academic training group. Caught in Lithuania. 1997. A fragment from digitalised slide film

The exhibition presents contemporary Lithuanian art from the late 20th and 21st centuries which was acquired by the museum in recent decades, but which has not yet been included in the permanent display of the National Gallery of Art.

The works are related to a period of change, which has left a historical mark on the country’s political and cultural life. Traditional art forms, like painting, sculpture, printmaking and photography, lost their status, and experimental new forms of expression, such as installations, objects, actions and happenings, were established in the 1990s.

This exhibition is intended to bring the permanent display at the National Gallery of Art, and the history of Lithuanian art contained in it, into the 21st century. The exhibition is expected to connect thematically and visually the end and the beginning of the extended display, as they are both marked by different crossroads of epochs.
