In the recent years artistic research has divided artist into at least two camps, while for the academia the number of the latter is at least three or even five. This slightly vague term has become a platform for speculation and manipulation that governs the distribution of knowledge, funds, influences and categories of trendiness and novelty.

Although this is by far the first show dealing with artistic research in Lithuania, what is more important is that it seeks to pose questions rather than offer solutions, perceptual instruments or evaluation tables.

The exhibition consists of two sections. In one space the artists expand their research processes, while the other one contains a visualisation of the study of artistic research initiated by Vytautas Michelkevičius and its mapping. This process has been and still is happening in several stages and in collaboration with researchers, artists and designers, while the installation in the project space Malonioji 6 is like a snapshot of the current stage of the research.

The exhibition presents The Map of Lithuanian Artistic Research: Collective Concept and Local Identity and the accompanying personal visual and textual reflections developed later by researchers and artists, as well as documentation of Vilnius-based artistic research meetings (workshops, salons and discussions).

The exhibition also features, both latently and manifestly, Sir Prof. Christopher Frayling’s text Research in Art and Design (1993), which was perhaps the first to address the problems of the relationship between art and research.

The exhibition will be on show until November 29, so on Thursday-Saturday from 3 pm to 7 pm the exhibition’s curator Vytautas Michelkevičius invites you to join him for a cup of coffee or tea and explore the exhibition and artistic research.
